2024: A year that taught us the power of collective change

From Barcelona Agraria we review actions and projects that have marked the last twelve months in the field of sustainable food.

We begin 2025 by summarising the main events and projects we have promoted through Barcelona Agraria over the past year.

2024 began with great concern about the climate emergency and its effects on local agriculture. Farmers and livestock breeders have had to face increasingly complex challenges, but hopeful initiatives have also emerged that demonstrate the sector's resilience.

Technical conferences have been transformed into spaces for innovation where municipal professionals, farming communities and administrations have forged fruitful alliances. A highlight was the 'Feeding Barcelona' conference, which brought together more than 200 representatives from councils, entities and organisations to discuss food policies in November. The event, organised with PEMB and with the collaboration of OCAS, the Government of Catalonia and Barcelona City Council, featured experts who shared experiences in transforming local food systems.

The Land Bank has renewed its website and has established itself as a territorial reference point, while collaboration with IRTA has driven various agri-food and forestry innovation projects. Silvopasture has proven to be an effective tool that combines fire prevention with the revitalisation of the rural economy.

One of the most significant developments has been the growing presence of women leading innovative agricultural projects. Their initiatives have brought new perspectives to the sector, combining the recovery of traditional knowledge with forward-looking proposals.

2024 has also been a prolific year for publications. We have published three practical guides: 'New Farmers', on access to land; 'Artisanal Territory', dedicated to shared processing facilities and small abattoirs; and 'Grazing Forests', focused on recovering the agroforestry mosaic. The book 'Farming Barcelona' has documented this agricultural transformation through personal stories that show how each local initiative helps redefine our relationship with food and territory.

Interviews published on the Barcelona Agraria website have given voice to key figures such as Neus Monllor, agri-social consultant and co-author of 'New Farmers', and Anna Roca, agri-food consultant and Professor of Geography at the University of Girona, who through their experience are helping to redefine the Catalan primary sector.

In the audiovisual field, we have presented two notable projects: the short film 'The Seeds of Resilience', which showcases the programme's objectives and initiatives, and 'Farming Barcelona', where Patxi Uriz portrays various innovative agricultural projects in the province.

2024 has shown that the combination of efforts, the fusion of tradition and innovation, and openness to new voices and perspectives make change a tangible reality. We thus begin 2025, ready to continue building together a fairer and more sustainable food system.
