Following the success of its presentation at the headquarters of the Barcelona Provincial Council last September, the photographic exhibition 'Barcelona pagesa. Retrats d'una agricultura en transformació' (Farming Barcelona. Portraits of a Changing Agriculture) begins its touring journey throughout the province. Starting in May 2025, this visual exhibition will visit five towns closely linked to the agricultural spaces and parks supported by the Barcelona Provincial Council, bringing citizens closer to the reality of an agriculture in complete transformation through the eyes of renowned photographer Patxi Uriz.
The exhibition, created by the Barcelona Agrària programme in collaboration with the Corporate Image and Institutional Promotion Department of the Barcelona Provincial Council, consists of 27 intimate and profound portraits that capture the essence of a new generation of farmers who are redefining the profession with creativity, freedom and commitment to the community. Each image, accompanied by inspiring quotes, invites the public to reflect on the fundamental role of farming in building a more sustainable, healthy and secure food future.
The first stop on this tour will be Igualada, linked to the Conca d'Òdena Agricultural Park, where the exhibition can be visited from 6-30 May 2025. Subsequently, it will travel to Sant Vicenç dels Horts (Baix Llobregat Agricultural Park) from 2 June to 15 July; to Palafolls (Baixa Tordera Agricultural Area) from 1-28 September; to Mataró (Mataró Agricultural Area) from late October to mid-November; and to Olesa de Montserrat (Montserrat Rural Park) from 21 November to 6 December.
The tour will culminate at the Industrial School of Barcelona, a symbolic space that housed the Barcelona School of Agriculture between 1910 and 2005, thus closing a circle that unites tradition with innovation, academia with fieldwork, and the city with the rural world.
A new vision of farming
The exhibition offers a visual and emotional journey through agricultural Barcelona, highlighting the talent and passion of 16 female and 11 male farmers who have chosen this profession as a way of life. Among the protagonists are figures such as Paloma Fuentes from La Datzira, who chose to dedicate herself to farming to be more free; Alba Casasayas from Les Arnaules, who emphasises that the land, if you take care of it, gives you everything; and Ariadna Tremoleda from Mas Les Vinyes, who wants a future based on respect for nature. There are also Iñigo Haughey from Can Calopa, who enjoys the magic of creating products that come from the earth; Adela Martínez from Huertos in the Sky, who believes that once you start planting there's no turning back; and Maria Giner from La Kosturica, who always walks with her head held high because of being a farmer.
'Farming Barcelona' is not just a photographic exhibition, but also an invitation to rethink our relationship with food and the landscape that surrounds us. Through these images, the Barcelona Provincial Council aims to raise public awareness about the importance of preserving agricultural spaces, promoting local agriculture and encouraging generational renewal in a sector that is key to the province's future.
Entry to the exhibition will be free at all venues. In addition, the public will have access to complementary materials such as the book 'Farming Barcelona. Portrats of a Changing Agriculture', presented on September 9th to coincide with World Agriculture Day, and the audiovisual accompanying the exhibition.
