The photographic exhibition 'Farming Barcelona: Portraits of a Changing Agriculture' is taking place at the exhibition hall of the Barcelona Provincial Council headquarters. The exhibition, organized by the Barcelona Agraria program with the collaboration of the Sub-Directorate of Corporate Image and Institutional Promotion of the Barcelona Provincial Council, aims to celebrate the diversity and vitality of the province's farming. The exhibition runs from today until 3rd October and is located at 126 Rambla de Catalonia.
The exhibition showcases the works of the renowned photographer and documentary filmmaker Patxi Uriz, born in Puente la Reina in 1964. Throughout his career, Uriz has been dedicated to capturing the beauty and complexity of rural life. Through 27 portraits and a short film, Uriz provides an intimate and profound insight into the lives of agricultural workers striving for a safer, healthier, and more sustainable food future in the region.
The exhibition is being held in conjunction with the launch of the book 'Farming Barcelona,' which was presented by the Barcelona Provincial Council on 9th September, coinciding with World Agriculture Day. The exhibition and the publication both aim to highlight the stories of the farmers who are working towards a more sustainable agriculture in the counties of Barcelona.
Some of the remarkable portraits include Paloma Fuentes, farmer rom La Datzira, who chose food growing to attain freedom; Alba Casasayas from Les Arnaules, who emphasizes that caring for the land results in great abundance; and Ariadna Tremoleda from Mas Les Vinyes, who envisions a future grounded in respect for nature. Additionally, there's Iñigo Haughey from Can Calopa, who appreciates the magic of creating products from the land; Adela Martínez from Huertos in the Sky, who believes that once you start planting, there's no turning back; and Maria Giner from La Kosturica, who always stands tall as a proud farmer.
A new era of agriculture
The "Farming Barcelona" exhibition showcases a new era of agriculture, portraying farming as a vibrant profession rich in ancestral wisdom and continuous innovation. The exhibition aims to increase public awareness about the critical role of local farming in preserving the environment and ensuring the future availability of healthy, safe, and sustainable food. Through the captivating images taken by Patxi Uriz, the goal is to celebrate the freedom, creativity, and communal passion that drive the farmers in the province of Barcelona.
The exhibition is free to enter and is open from Monday to Saturday, including public holidays, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. It features an intimate and moving portrayal of Barcelona's rural life with graphic design and illustrations by Tereza Janáková and graphic production by Maud Gran Format.
