Montserrat Rural Park: A model of sustainability and agri-food innovation

The agrarian space emphasizes the importance of collective agri-food transformation facilities to boost the primary sector and value local food in its presentation video.

The Montserrat Rural Park (PRM) presentation video offers an immersion in the life and activities of this agrarian space. Titled 'Montserrat Rural Park: An agricultural and Pastoral Sanctuary', the audiovisual showcases the conservation of the natural landscape and the traditional agricultural and pastoral practices that define the territory.

Established in 2019 on the initiative of local councils with the support of Barcelona Provincial Council, the Montserrat Rural Park covers 18 municipalities distributed between the counties of Anoia, Bages, Baix Llobregat, and Vallès Occidental. Its mission is to promote the production of healthy, sustainable, and local food for nearly 123,000 people.

The video emphasizes the importance of preserving sustainable agricultural and livestock practices, as well as the area's biodiversity and cultural heritage. It includes interviews with local people who highlight the benefits of living and working in this environment, emphasizing the harmonious coexistence between nature and human activity.

The protagonists of the video are Maria Rovira, a farmer from De la Maria Eco farm in Piera (Anoia), and Valentina Muñoz, a dairy goat herder in Granjas de Poniente, Sant Vicenç de Castellet (Bages). These women entrepreneurs explain how Montserrat Rural Park has helped them develop their activities in a sustainable way.

The Montserrat Rural Park is firmly committed to organic agriculture and supports farming in the transition to more sustainable forms of production. It also promotes extensive livestock farming to improve animal welfare, encourage biodiversity, and reduce the risk of wildfires. Notably, it houses the only shared-use meat processing facility in Catalonia, an essential resource to energize the primary sector and promote local foods.

Direct sales are another strong point of Montserrat Rural Park, offering new opportunities to agri-food entrepreneurs in the territory.
