New resources to improve agricultural infrastructure in the Lower Tordera Agrarian Space

The 2025 investments will prioritise drainage network maintenance, the launch of a shared food processing facility and various initiatives to boost local agriculture.

The Assembly of Lower Tordera Agrarian Space has approved its annual action plan for 2025, reinforcing its commitment to the viability of the agricultural sector and territorial sustainability. The programme includes various strategic initiatives and benefits from a significant increase in financial support from the Barcelona Provincial Council, rising from €80,000 to €120,000.
Among the most notable actions are improving the drainage network and launching an innovative shared food processing facility. This equipment will allow farmers to process plant-based products without having to make individual investments in machinery and facilities, thus enhancing the profitability of their farms.

The plan also includes maintaining the agrometeorological prediction and alert service, highly valued by farmers for planning fieldwork, and strengthening support for generational handover through tools such as the land bank. Regarding training, collaboration with the Intermediate Level Training Course in Agroecology in Malgrat de Mar will continue.

One of the most innovative initiatives is the agricultural by-products management project for the production of quality compost. Progress in this area is expected during 2025, promoting the circular economy while supporting the production sector.

The programme also includes actions to bring agricultural activity closer to citizens, such as the installation of new signage in the territory and the development of educational programmes with schools. These initiatives are part of the territory's food strategy which, with the support of the Barcelona Provincial Council, works to consolidate a more sustainable and resilient local food system.

The approval of this plan, which took place at the assembly held in Palafolls on the 18th of December, received unanimous support from municipal representatives and the area's agricultural sector.

A strategic agricultural territory

The Lower Tordera Agrarian Space is one of nine managed agricultural spaces in the province of Barcelona. The territory extends along the River Tordera and concentrates almost half of the Maresme's agricultural area, with more than 2,300 hectares of crops. The area stands out for its productive diversity: whilst Palafolls, Malgrat de Mar, Santa Susanna and Blanes are leaders in irrigated horticultural production, Tordera is characterised by its cereal and fodder crops, as well as hosting most of the area's livestock farms.

In this context, the support of the Barcelona Provincial Council, which has significantly increased its financial contribution this year, is essential to ensure the sustainable development of the agricultural area.
