Women in Farming

Explore the growing presence of women managing agricultural holdings in the province of Barcelona, including their age, education, farm size and production focus.

Source: Own research based on data from the agrarian censuses of 1999, 2009 and 2020

The interactive map examines data from the last three agricultural censuses (1999, 2009 and 2020) to analyse the evolution of farms managed by women in the province of Barcelona. These censuses, conducted by the National Statistics Institute (INE), provide a detailed view of the structural changes in the sector. To ensure comparability across different periods, uniform criteria have been applied in the selection of holdings.

The map is specifically based on INE microdata, which offer a high level of detail by municipality and farm. This approach allows for cross-referencing variables and applying consistent parameters in defining agricultural holdings. In the process of creating the map, census information has been simplified and harmonised, excluding farms from 1999 and 2009 that did not meet the criteria established in 2020. This method ensures a consistent and accurate analysis over time.

This methodology has enabled the creation of visualisations that faithfully reflect the sector's evolution, facilitating a clear understanding of trends in women's presence at the helm of agrarian holdings in the province of Barcelona.

3 women who lead the way

In the Barcelona region, only 25% of agricultural holdings are managed by women. This is a reality that needs to be transformed if we want to achieve a more sustainable, local, and inclusive food model.
