In the province of Barcelona, there is a program aimed at transforming municipal food systems towards healthier, more sustainable, safer, and closer models. It's called BCN Smart Rural and is promoted by the Barcelona Provincial Council.
In this presentation video, titled "The Seeds of Resilience", Sònia Callau, head of the corporation's Agrarian Territorial Directorate and program coordinator, shows how to work with farmers, town councils and local bodies to promote an agri-food model that recognizes the central role played by small farmers and livestock holders in the production of quality food and the preservation of the territory's landscapes.
The video also reveals how BCN Smart Rural proposes actions so that the primary sector contributes to mitigating climate change, rather than accelerating it, and how it seeks to ensure that the new farming generation has access to land and that small and medium-sized enterprises can transform and process their products competitively.
Additionally, it explains how the program promotes the figure of agrarian parks, ideal spaces for establishing mechanisms to dynamize agricultural and livestock activities, and how it fosters alternative food networks, facilitating direct sales between producers and consumers, as well as food strategies, which are participatory processes where all key agents of the system work together to advance towards this new model.
"The Seeds of Resilience" can be viewed on the Barcelona Provincial Council's YouTube channel. This piece is part of the BCN Smart Rural Stories, a series of short films aimed at promoting the BCN Smart Rural program and its benefits for society and the territory.
