The Barcelona Provincial Council promotes awareness of biomass in primary and secundary schools

The corporation drives the creation of educational materials with the aim that children in the region understand the benefits of harnessing this indigenous source of renewable energy.

As part of the BCN Smart Rural strategy, the Barcelona Provincial Council has promoted the creation of educational materials to make children and young people in the demarcation aware of the benefits of using biomass. These resources include a variety of learning activities and consist of a primary education folder, a secondary education folder and a poster. The teaching materials have been managed by the Forest Science and Technology Center of Catalonia, with the support of the Mel Environmental Education entity.

This action aims to spread the socio-environmental benefits of using agricultural and forestry biomass as a source of renewable energy. In this way, the aim is to arouse the students' interest in the rural world, to make them aware of the importance of taking care of the natural environment and to enable them to evaluate with a critical eye the origin of the energies used currently.

Renewable and local energy

Biomass is an indigenous source of renewable energy from the sustainable management of agricultural and forestry residues. Its widespread use has many environmental, energy and economic advantages, and also contributes to the sustainable management of forests and fire prevention. It also presents a neutral balance of CO2 emissions and favours the territory's energy self-sufficiency, reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

The pedagogical resources developed can be freely downloaded at this link.
