The commitment to the production and consumption of local foods contributes to combating the climate emergency

The food strategies promoted by the Barcelona Provincial Council take centre stage in the new 'BCN Smart Rural Story'.

Food is a fundamental need for people, and ensuring its supply is a duty of governments. However, despite Catalonia having a national food strategy since 2021, only one city in the Barcelona province has an approved food strategy in the process of implementation. For this reason, the latest short film in the 'BCN Smart Rural Stories' addresses this concerning fact, especially considering the climate challenges we face and the expectations of food, water and energy resource scarcity.

The audiovisual piece titled 'Let's Eat Local' highlights the importance of transitioning towards healthier, safer and more sustainable food systems and features three women who are leading the way in the Barcelona province. They are Rosa Binimelis, an expert in ecological economics; Alba Casasayas, a farmer at Les Arnaules de Viladordis; and Pilar Guitart, a partner of Supercoop Manresa, a cooperative and participatory supermarket that promotes local food production.

A unique publication in the world

The short film focuses on the urgency for local governments to design and implement food strategies that enable them to ensure the supply of locally grown foods to the population. It also showcases 'Feeding Barcelona', a publication edited by the Barcelona Provincial Council as part of the BCN Smart Rural strategy. The publication, which is available in digital format, is the first practical guide created by a public administration to promote local food strategies. It aims to become a reference work for towns and cities that want to advocate for locally sourced food.

For more information about the publication 'Feeding Barcelona' and how to design and implement local food strategies, please contact Sònia Callau, head of the Territorial Agricultural Directorate of Barcelona Provincial Council.
